Specialisation in photonic systems and communication (SPC)

Master degree in Physics, specialisation in Photonics and Optical Materials (POM)

The Chair in Photonics offers Supélec engineer students and students enrolled elsewhere to become specialized in photonic systems and communication (SPC). The specialisation includes the following program:

A set of 7 lectures that are called MAJOR (144h lectures and exercices) :

  • Physics and applications of semiconductor lasers
  • Fiber optic communications and optical networks
  • Solar energy, photodetectors and photovoltaics
  • Optical materials
  • Nonlinear optics
  • Optical signal processing
  • Hot topics in photonics

A set of 6 lectures to be selected among a catalog of so-called MINOR lectures (144h lectures and exercices). Hereafter are those lectures that are offered by the Chair in Photonics:

  • Multidisciplinary approach of nonlinear systems
  • Imaging with high angular resolution
  • Numerical methods for physics
  • Optical measurement
  • Networks (voices, data, video)

The specialisation in photonics is also offered as part of a MASTER degree in Physics, with specialisation in “Photonics and Optical Materials” (POM). This Master program is a joint program between CentraleSupélec and the University of Lorraine and includes:

A set of 6 lectures offered by CentraleSupélec :

  • Physics and applications of semiconductor lasers
  • Fiber optic communications and optical networks
  • Solar energy, photodetectors and photovoltaics
  • Optical materials
  • Nonlinear optics
  • Optical signal processing

A set of 4 lectures delivered by University of Lorraine and to be selected in a catalog that includes the following lectures:

  • Spectroscopy
  • Quantum physics of light-matter interaction
  • Integrated optics and nano-optics
  • Quantum optics
An internship of 5 months in a company or in an academic lab

Experiments in the lab for a total of 32h:

  • Holography
  • Electro-optic modulation and optical communications
  • Fiber-optic communication
  • Laser cavity
  • Fourier optics

A final year project (200h) either in the framework of an industrial contract (CEI) or in the context of a reserch project performed within the Chair in Photonics

An internship of 5 months in a company or in an academic lab

  • Students from CentraleSupélec enrolled in the Supelec curriculum: admission following the criteria of enrollment in third year engineering program

(to be already graduated in engineering with a diploma that is recognized by CTI in France, to be graduated as a Master M1 or M2 scientific degree in university, to have an equivalent diploma from our international academic partners)
